MD5 - Message Digest Algorithm 5
MD5 (Message Digest Algorithm 5) is a widely used cryptographic hash function that is used to generate a fixed-size output (128-bit) from a variable-size input data. It was designed to be a one-way function that takes any input and produces a fixed-length output, called a digest or hash, which is typically represented as a 32-digit hexadecimal number.
It was invented by Ronald Rivest in 1991 and is widely used for a variety of purposes such as checking data integrity, detecting data tampering, and password hashing. However, due to known vulnerabilities, it is no longer considered a secure hashing algorithm for cryptographic purposes.
MD5 is not considered to be secure for cryptographic purposes anymore due to the discovery of various vulnerabilities, which can allow an attacker to generate collisions, i.e., different messages that have the same hash value. As a result, it is recommended to use more secure hash functions such as SHA-256 or SHA-3 for cryptographic applications.
